Visit Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio, on a day trip from Rome. Your journey will be in a fully-equipped car, where you will be accompanied by a knowledgeable English-speaking driver. Orvieto is one of Italy's many sun-soaked hill towns where it has managed to retain its charm over the centuries. The town sits majestically a thousand feet above the valley floor on a big chunk of tufo, a porous volcanic rock from the nearby Lake of Bolsena. Wine aficionados will love the locally-produced wines, while everyone will love indulging their taste buds in the typical Umbrian cuisine. Art lovers will revel in the spectacular Duomo, with its gleaming mass of mosaics, stained glass, sculptures on the façade, and the stunningly detailed Renaissance frescoes inside. Fans of architecture will marvel at the honeycomb of tunnels and catacombs that create a hidden labyrinth underneath the streets and buildings. Civita di Bagnoregio is perched on an outcrop of tufa rock, and can only be reached by a special pedestrian bridge. It has been called the “dying city” by Bonaventura Tecchi, who was born here, because it is at risk of disappearing due to the tufa hill which it stands on being constantly eroded by the two streams in the valleys below, and by the effects of rain and wind. The fate of this unique place, with its cluster of medieval houses, and the handful of families who still live here, and the surreal landscape of the surrounding white clay canyons, make Bagnoregio a unique and enchanting place.During the tour we will stop off for a typical local lunch.
